PARTICIPANTS IN FLOOD RELIEF EFFORTS
On Saturday, November 16, 2013, members of the Austin-Oak Hill Rotary Club provided assistance to the Dove Springs community that was devastated by the Halloween flood. Club members included President Susan Steeg, Treasurer Ray Gilley, Bob Royal, Tom Cripps, and Lee Stuart. Also present was Robert Marler and his daughter Sofia. The club members staffed the distribution site that was set up on South Pleasant Valley Road at Quicksilver. Tables were stocked with donated items which included food, diapers, cleaning supplies, buckets, rubber gloves, masks, clothing, and water. Donations were received at the site during the day and distributed to residents who stopped by to collect what they needed. The distribution site has expanded since it started following the flood. From our vantage point, you could look across the street at homes that were flooded with more than 10 feet of water.
Over 300 community volunteers participated in ongoing cleanup activities at homes in the community, including club member Steve Swanson. The community will be needing assistance as we near the holiday season. A toy drive is planned, and club members are asked to bring a toy to the meeting to donate to this drive.
George Morales, Chief Deputy Constable for Precinct 2 (pictured below with President Susan), and a lifelong resident of Dove Springs thanked the members of the club for assisting their community in this crisis.
